In February, the index of business activity in the UK construction sector was 49.5 points, having decreased from the January value of 50.6 points. These IHS Markit data point to a weakening of business activity among British construction companies. The February value of the index was the lowest since September 2017 and turned out to be significantly below its assessment by experts, which was at the level of 50.3 points. At the same time, the activity in housing construction, showing reinforcement for the 13th consecutive month, increased slightly. However, activity in commercial and civil construction fell in February at the fastest pace since March 2018. The number of new jobs in the construction sector grew at the slowest rate since May 2018.
