The number of holders of British passports, who became citizens of Germany, increased by 162% in 2017 against the background of the forthcoming UK withdrawal from the EU next year, the German Office for Federal Statistics said. The total number of British citizens who obtained German citizenship in 2016 and 2017 was about 10,400, which is more than twice the number of Britons who received German citizenship for 15 years from 2000. In connection with Brexit, many Britons worry that they may lose their right to live and work in Europe's largest economy with a record low unemployment. The British can obtain German citizenship while Britain is still a member of the EU.
