Import of LNG from the USA to EU countries increased 2 times in 2016-2017

The volume of imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States to the European Union doubled in 2016-2017 and reached 2 billion 800 million cubic meters, the European Commission said. The share of US gas exports to Europe over this period has increased from 5% to 10%. As previously reported, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and US President Donald Trump agreed to “strengthen the EU-US strategic cooperation in the field of energy”. Member of the European Commission for Energy Miguel Arias Chantier said that the increase in LNG imports from the US is “an important element in ensuring the security of gas supplies to the EU”. The EC report says that the EU-funded LNG infrastructure projects will increase the reserve capacity of the EU by another 15 billion cubic meters by 2021.
